Palm Beach County Woodturners

Show and Tell Gallery July 27, 2002

Prepared by George Z. Miller, Secretary

We had good participation in our July Gallery with 11 presentations encompassing some 26 turned items.

Bill Ashworth presented a segmented bowl that was finished with 2 coats of epoxy finish a clear coat.  He recommends using a disposable brush and the "long time frame" type of epoxy. He suspends the piece by means of a wire hoop that he inserts into the recessed foot of the bowl.    Brian Rosencrantz brought two bowls, one of Jackwood finished with acrylic and gold leafed inside and the other a turned, carved, footless ceremonial bowl of Mahogany with an ebonized finish.    Autumn Rosencrantz and Brian displayed the 6 pair of earrings that they made using Lignin Vitae, Bone and gold wire. Carl Schneider showed his fluted vase of Mahogany finished with wiping Polly.      Jim Weinburg turned four pieced from a buried citrus stump. He finished these pieces with "Crystal Lacquer".    Mitch Wolok brought in a large Norfolk Island Pine hollow form with a spiked lid. The piece was finished with spar varnish.   Dick Snayd turned a Mahogany lantern utilizing a flickering X-mas bulb. He also brought in 2 citrus apples he made. He reported that he had reached is goal to fund the building of a house for a needy person in the Caribbean Islands using the proceeds from his turnings. He indicated that he was going to fund another.  Frank Robershaw displayed his laminated pepper mill. He used Walnut, Maple and Oak. He also showed a Corian toothbrush holder, pens and bottle stoppers as well as a segmented bowl.  Francis Moates brought a small bowl made of ficus and a Mahogany bowl with 5 coats of Deft.  He pointed out his deli"cut" chainsaw carving.  Bob Brulotte had three interesting items.  The first was a Norfolk Isle Pine translucent lampshade, finished with wiping Polly.  Once he had the shade he needed a lamp base, so he turned two. One of the bases was from Oysterwood finished with Clear Lacquer the other from Dade County Pine finished with wiping polly.  Carl Spinnler finished the presentations with his 4 pieces. Three were turned from Norfolk Island Pine, a Vase, a small bowl and a beautiful 19 inch diameter bowl. Many hours were invested in that piece. His last item was a 14inch salad bowl turned from Mahogany.  All of his items were finished with Tung Oil.

Editorial Comment:  Please complete the Monthly Gallery Sheet.

Only 7 of the above listed presenters completed the Monthly Gallery Sheet providing me information on their items. I hope that my notes were complete and that I did not miss anyone or fail to describe the items displayed accurately.
