CLUB COLLABORATIVE EVENT

Each year at this time the Palm Beach County Woodturners conducts a challenge event. In the past we have challenged members to produce a project from a given raw material. We have made projects from Banksia Pods, blocks of Maple and Ash and other materials. This year we have decided to challenge members to creatively finish a project begun by another member of the club.

The purpose of the Club Collaborative Event is to encourage creative thinking and cooperation within the club. Many of the world's finest turners participate from time to time in collaborative efforts. The results of these collaborations are some of the best known works of the woodturning world.
A secondary purpose of the event is to encourage members to try new ideas and new techniques. You are encouraged to think of the unfinished turning as raw material for the expression of your artistic talents. Talk to the person who created the original turning and discuss what was in his/her mind during the creation of the original work but don't be limited to their vision. Your ideas on finishing the work will provide her/him with new visions for their future works.
Throughout the two month period of the event workshops will be conducted which will focus on the Club Collaborative Event. At the workshops we will have available power carvers, woodburners, rotary carvers and other tools that members may use to work on their projects. We will also discuss artistic techniques such as texturing, painting, burning, sectioning, piercing and other ideas that members may use to finish their works.
To participate in these workshops contact
Brian Rosencrantz (561)818-5379 or Sam Tischler (954)610-3300.

1.  The event is to begin at the meeting on June 22, 2002 and end at the meeting, two months later, on August 24, 2002.

2.  Each member should bring one turned item to the first meeting. If you cannot attend but wish to participate send your turning with another member who can also return to you the piece drawn in your name.

3.  Items should fit into a 6" cube. (Items may be faceplate or spindle turnings. Bowls, hollow forms and boxes are specifically suggested. Consideration should be given to remounting of the item for re-turning.)

4.  Items should be unfinished, that is, without an applied coating.

5.  Each item will be given a number corresponding to an identically numbered ticket.  Items will be identified as to the original turner on a list held by the organizing committee and will be digitally photographed in its original state.

6.  Participants will draw numbered tickets to determine which item they will receive to complete.

7.  Participants are free to use the initial item in any way that seems suitable to them. They may turn, cut, burn, paint, glue, add to or reduce the initial turning to produce whatever finished product they wish, but the initial turning must be some part of the finished work.

8.  The person who finishes the project will retain possession of the finished piece.

9.  To encourage free thought and creativity participants are invited to participate in workshops throughout the two month work period specifically centered on the collaborative projects. At those workshops tools such as power carvers, Dremel tools and woodburners will be made available to those who wish to take advantage of them.

10.  At the end of the two month work period finished works should be brought to the club and each item will be presented gallery style by the person who completed the piece in conjunction with the person who made the initial submission.

11.  Prizes will be awarded in nine categories based on established criteria. No item may win in more than one category. Prizes will be gift certificates from Craft Supplies.

Categories are:
best in show
best novice (defined as club members for less than one year)
most incomprehensible
most imaginative
most practical
best carving/burning
best painting/decorative finish
most difficult
greatest transformation

12. Voting will be done by the members present at the August meeting. Each member will receive nine tallies. A receptacle will be provided for each piece into which members may deposit their tallies.

If you have any questions come to the meeting on Saturday May 25 or contact me,

Brian Rosencrantz (561)818-5379.
